I vividly remember the very first time I ever saw a bleeding heart flower. I was probably about six or seven, visiting my aunt and uncle in their beautiful Victorian home in the mountains near the Catskills. I only visited that place a few times in my life, but it left a huge impression. I deeply loved my Uncle Eddie, who always made me laugh, and my sweet Aunt Eleanor, who was one of my mom’s very favorite humans. Their warm, loving smiles always filled a room.
There was a small garden next to a windmill near that house with the big, wide porch, among the towering trees and near a babbling brook. I can recall my Aunt walking me on the crushed gravel drive (I can still hear our footsteps on it), over to the side yard to show me this magical plant. A necklace of perfect bright pink hearts hung from the stems. It’s still a favorite.
And although Aunt Eleanor and Uncle Eddie are long gone, their beautiful home, their beautiful garden, and their beautiful hearts will always be remembered.
