I Am Here Always (Hand-Pulled Collagraph and Encaustic Painting)

40” x 40" These past years have been exceptionally difficult for many. More than ever before, we need to be there for each other, no matter what. As we all move in this challenging world together, we can so often do it a little easier when we know someone is by our side, holding our hand through it all.

The figures were printed as a hand pulled collagraph on Rives BFK cotton printmaking paper using Akua Inks and then mounted onto the birch panel and embellished with elaborate designs of textiles painted with encaustic paints. This piece has been in the works for more than two full years. Getting lost in creating beautiful patterns and designs helped me a great deal, working through this unusually hard time by spending countless hours in the studio and trying to focus on the still beautiful people and things in our lives.

ENCAUSTIC is a Greek word meaning “to heat or burn in” (enkaustikos). Encaustic consists of natural bees wax and dammar resin (crystallized tree sap). I use R&F wax medium, as well as their pigment wax blocks and pigment sticks. Using a selection of brushes, carving tool and a heated stylus, I “paint” with the hot wax.

All my encaustics are painted onto high quality birch panels and are ready to be hung as is with natural wood sides exposed. You may also frame them. Treat an encaustic painting as you would any fine art. Use care hanging, transporting or storing a painting. Consistent Temperature – Hang and store at normal room temperatures. Avoid direct sunlight, freezing and extremely hot temperatures; wax will melt at 150°F / 65°C.
